Free Activity: How Animals Prepare for Winter

Squirrels gathering acorns, Canada geese flying south… the signs of the season to come are all around us. For humans, preparing for winter may mean pulling out mittens and hats and eating warming foods, like soups and stews, but what about the other species out there? The shift from fall to winter is a busy time for animals – which means it’s a great time for learning!

Download the activity sheet below and print it at home or from your local library. Kids can learn about how some of Maine’s native species prepare for the long winter and color in the scenes. The next time you’re out and about, see if you can spot animals and birds prepping for cold weather!
