6 Summer Jobs for Middle & High School Kids

Summer break is just around the corner, and for many middle school and high school-aged kids, they may be thinking about taking on a summer job. Not only can a summer job provide valuable work experience and a way to earn some extra cash, but it can also help teach responsibility, time management, and other important life skills. From traditional jobs like lifeguarding and lawn care to more unique opportunities like working at a summer camp or starting a small business, like a lemonade stand or washing cars, there are plenty of options available for kids looking to make the most of their summer break while still doing something fun and engaging. And who knows, what begins as a summer job could easily lead to a successful career after graduation. Below we’re sharing summer job ideas and some corresponding careers those jobs could potentially inspire. Read through with your middle or high schooler and discuss what they might be interested in! Is your child interested in something that’s not on our list? Help them brainstorm!

Lifeguarding

Does your teen love the water? Kids 15 and over can be certified as lifeguards through the American Red Cross. Keep in mind, they’ll need to pass a few prerequisites, including a pre-course swimming skills test before their certification courses. Lifeguarding is perfect for kids who enjoy being outdoors or are interested in potential future careers in healthcare or even marine sciences!

EMT Training or Volunteer Fire Department

For teens specifically interested in a future career in healthcare or public service, getting trained as a junior EMT or Firefighter could be a great place to start. Tap this link to learn more about the National Junior Firefighter Program or contact your local station to inquire whether they offer a junior program.

Dishwashing

Washing dishes is often the first step for a bright future in the restaurant or culinary industry. For kids interested in culinary arts or entrepreneurship, dishwashing allows a first-hand look at what it takes to run a kitchen and a business.

Camp Counselor/Babysitting

Maine is chock-full of summer camps and they’re always in need of camp counselors! Camp counseling is great for kids interested in the outdoors but it’s also an excellent job for tweens and teens interested in a career in education. If your kiddo isn’t quite old enough to work at a camp, babysitting can be a great option. The Red Cross offers babysitting and childcare courses for kids interested!

Lawn Mowing

For kiddos who may not be quite old enough to get a work permit but want to make some extra money (and learn responsibility while they’re at it), offering lawn mowing or yard clean-up services around your neighborhood could be a great option! Lawn mowing, yard clean-up, and gardening is a great option for outdoorsy kids who dream of one day exploring a career as an arborist, landscape designer, florist – and more! Just be sure to supervise younger kids and/or ensure they’re working safely and for trusted adults.

Dog Walking or Pet Care

If your child loves animals and hopes to become a veterinarian or work with animals one day, dog walking or pet sitting could be a great summer gig! Help them outline their services and make signs to advertise their offerings, and be sure to supervise them appropriately.
